Puglia, the ideal territory for viticulturea
The Cavin S.r.l. Italy operates in an area of great winemaking tradition, in fact the wine production of Puglia is among the most important in Italy for quantity and quality always.
For many years Pugliese wine has been sold as bulk wine in other regions of Northern Italy and also in some European countries where it was used as a “cutting wine” to reinforce the wines produced in those areas of Italy not viticultural, conferring , however, color, body and alcohol content.
From the vines of Negro Amaro, Primitivo and Uva di Troia you get grapes and wines that in recent years have gained international prominence, marking the recovery of wines from Puglia.
The importance of the development of viticulture and wine production was also well understood by Frederick II who had thousands of vines planted in the area of Castel del Monte, importing the plants from the nearby Campania region.
Puglia has a territory dedicated to viticulture of about 95,000 hectares, of which the great majority is located in the plains.
Starting from the north, we meet the Gargano, a promontory formed by limestone and eruptive rocks, to follow, always in the province of Foggia, we find the Tavoliere; the Murge, a very extensive area that covers the provinces of Barletta-Andria-Trani, Bari and Brindisi and finally the Salento with the province of Lecce and part of those of Brindisi and Taranto.
For some decades we have been trying to make the most of the territory, achieving very high quality levels for some wines, especially based on native vines.
In the area between Brindisi and Taranto, in particular, the most widespread form of breeding is “Alberello”.
In recent decades, the “espalier” form of breeding is replacing the ancient form of breeding in Alberello.
It will be necessary to wait until the 1990s to register in Puglia a new awareness of the oenological potential of the region by local producers and also of wineries coming from other regions of Italy.
The vines of Puglia
In Puglia we produce not only red wines and rosés, but also interesting white wines, especially from autochthonous grapes, such as Bombino Bianco, Malvasia Bianca, Verdeca, Fiano, Bianco d’Alessano, Moscato Bianco and Pampanuto. The Chardonnay, despite being a grape that does not have “historical ties” with Puglia, is in fact the most cultivated and widespread white grape of the region. The most common red berried grapes in Puglia are: Negro Amaro, Primitivo, Uva di Troia, Malvasia Nera (from Lecce and Brindisi), Montepulciano, Sangiovese, Aglianico, Aleatico, Bombino Nero, Susumaniello and Ottavianello, the name with which the Cinsaut wine is called in the region. and Cabernet Sauvignon Despite this ampelographic richness, Apulia is mainly famous for the Negro Amaro, Primitivo and Uva di Troia, each in its selection areas, the Negroamaro in the south of the region, in Salento, while the central area is the land of Primitivo, and the Uva di Troia is the most widespread variety in the northern part.
The areas of production of wine in Puglia
In Puglia, wine is produced almost everywhere, representing not only an economic resource but also a link with tradition and culture of these places. The wine production of Puglia is also favored by the climate and the amount of sunshine that the earth receives during the year.
The alberello and espalier breeding system is the most widespread cultivation system in Puglia as it allows the vine to exploit the soil resources to the maximum, improving the quality of the grapes and therefore of the wine.
